Please Support Increasing Australia’s Aid Budget.
As your constituent, I’m concerned about the ongoing decline in Australia’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), now just 0.68% of the Federal Budget. This reduction comes as global crises intensify and multiply – Lebanon, Yemen, Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza, to name a few. I am concerned that at a percentage of 0.68% of the Federal Budget, Australian aid is not adequate to respond in a world of compounding crises – climate change, displacement, poverty, conflict, resource scarcity. You may be aware of these figures: 1 in 5 children live in conflict zones 700 million people endure extreme poverty Humanitarian need has surged by 80% since 2019. Australia’s aid budget is not adequate to respond. But it’s not just about the devastation right now, it’s also about Australia’s role in development which is a protective factor against conflict and disaster. It is not just morally the right thing to do. It also aligns with our national interests. Increased aid strengthens our national security by addressing the root causes of instability and opens economic opportunities in our region, where many of our top trading partners were once aid recipients. Increasing ODA from 0.68% to 1% of the Federal Budget by FY26–27 would reaffirm our leadership and reflect the responsibility we have as a wealthy country to be a good global citizen. Recent research by The RedBridge Group shows Australians back a modest increase in aid, driven by values of empathy and being a ‘good neighbour.’ Many are unaware of how little we currently spend, and when informed, they often support an increase. Please support raising Australia’s aid budget to 1%—it’s a small step that would make a big difference. Thank you for your time.
